The Danish word the world needs to combat stress Pyt

The Danish word the world needs to combat stress PytThe Danish word the world needs to combat stress PytDanes are some of the happiest people in the world, and they also happen to have a lot of cool words for ways to be happy. You may have heard about hygge, which has been the subject of countless books, articles and commercials. Often mistranslated to mean cozy, it really describes the process of creating intimacy.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraBut another word pyt which sort of sounds like pid was recently voted the most popular word by Danes, beating out dvle (to linger) and krnkelsesparat (ready to take offense).Pyt doesnt have an exact English translation. Its more a cultural concept about cultivating healthy thoughts to deal with stress. As a native Dane and a psychologist, I think the concepts that underpin the word are applicable to people everywhere.A way to move onPy t is usually expressed as an interjection in reaction to a daily hassle, frustration or mistake. It most closely translates to the English sayings, Dont worry about it, stuff happens or oh, well. You might shatter a glass in the kitchen, shrug and say, pyt. You might see a parking ticket lodged under your windshield wiper and, just as you become hot with anger, shake your head and murmur, pyt.At its core, its about accepting and resetting. Its used as a reminder to step back and refocus rather than overreact. Instead of assigning blame, its a way to to let go and move on.You might say pyt in response to something you did pyt, that was a dumb thing to say or to support another person pyt with that, dont fret about your coworkers insensitivity.Pyt can reduce stress because it is a sincere attempt to encourage yourself and others to not get bogged down by minor daily frustrations. One Danish business leader has suggested that knowing when to say pyt at work can lead to more job satis faction.Overcoming the tendency to blameTheres a rich strain of psychological research devoted to understanding how we interpret and react to other peoples actions.Study after study show that we are happier and live longer when we have fewer daily hassles. And in some cases, what constitutes a hassle might be tied to how we interpret whats happening around us.Pyt can help people avoid the tendency to blame others. Say youre late to an appointment and theres a person in front of you whos driving slowly. It can feel irrationally personal. But research shows that we get angrier when we explain someones behavior by pointing to their incompetence, intentionality or poor character.By saying pyt, youre deciding that its not worth letting someone elses actions, which are out of your control, bother you its water off a ducks back. You can also use other strategies, such as thinking about situational constraints maybe the driver was ill or considering whether this will be an issue in two hou rs, two days or two weeks.Of course, you wouldnt say pyt in response to being seriously wronged. And the word shouldnt be used when you ought to take responsibility. Nor should it be used as an excuse for inaction.Danes who teach positive psychology have also written about how applying pyt to too many aspects of your life isnt healthy, especially if they concern your core needs or values.Hitting the pyt buttonLetting go can also be facilitated by doing things like walking in nature, doing yoga or mediation, exercising, keeping a journal or engaging in creative work.Or you can always get a pyt button. Danish teachers use pyt buttons to teach their students how to let go. Teachers find that it can help children cope with smaller frustrations I lost the game or I cant find my favorite pencil and it helps to teach them that everything cant be perfect. These are important skills to learn. Research shows that perfectionism is related to worry and depression. Meanwhile, self-compassion an d social support can help prevent perfectionism from leading to these negative outcomes. In recent years, the pyt button has become popular among Danish adults, who can either make one at home or buy one that, when pressed, says, pyt pyt pyt and breathe deeply, it will all be okay in Danish. And in this case, there might be an English equivalent the reset button.Marie Helweg-Larsen, Professor of Psychology, the Glenn E. 4 Things You Need to Ditch to Get Ahead at Work - The Muse

4 Things You Need to Ditch to Get Ahead at Work - The Muse4 Things You Need to Ditch to Get Ahead at WorkWhen you think about advancing your career, what do you think about doing? Learning new skills? Building your network? Maybe pursuing a side gig? These are all great options for getting ahead at work. If youre gunning for a promotion or simply want to make yourself more marketable for future opportunities, you cant go wrong by expanding your knowledge and building relationships. But as you solidify your plans for advancement this year, Id like you to also consider a different approach letting go. Sometimes the thing holding us back isnt a lack of something- its our refusal to ditch something thats become outdated or irrelevant. Check out the list below, and ask yourself if you can make room for those new skills or relationships by abandoning that which you no longer need.1. An Unhelpful MentorYou will always need people who can help you professionally. There are plenty of examples of top performers who access coaches or mentors to help them navigate difficult decisions or major changes. Because relationships evolve over time, however, its entirely possible for someone to be influential and helpful at one point in your relationship, and then become problematic later on. As you progress in your career, someone who was once a great mentor may grow competitive. Or he may simply get stuck in an outdated mindtischset while you (and your company) move on. Whatever the reason, if you outgrow a mentor, consider letting go of the relationship- at least in its current form. You dont have to cut ties completely or end a friendship, but you dont have to hold onto this person as your career guru, either.2. An Irrelevant GoalGoals are obviously important. If you arent working toward something concrete, after all, then what are you doing? And yet being inflexible in the pursuit of your goals may lead to trouble in some situations. A leadership change at work, a transfer to a different department, a new opportunity, or any other number of unforeseen changes could all impact the feasibility of any given goal. Lets say you set a goal to increase revenue for a specific product line, but your supervisor tells you she wants you to increase revenue on a different product line. If you cant do both, you better align yourself with the company goals or you may land in hot water. While you certainly dont want to get in the habit of abandoning a goal the minute you feel challenged or stressed, you do need to get in the practice of periodically evaluating whether your goals are still high priority.3. An Outdated ApproachNo one plans to be the person who blurts out, But weve always done it that way And yet, when we get comfortable, we become afraid of change and seek security in what we know. Ask yourself if youre sticking with something- a routine, a software system, a practice- because its familiar. Do you feel a twinge of fear when you think about modifying your a pproach? That twinge is the beginning of the Weve always done it this way mindset. Theres certainly a benefit in knowing a particular tool of your trade backward and forward. You can work quickly and confidently when youre at ease with your processes and technology, but getting stuck is dangerous. Committing yourself to exploring even one new thing a year in your industry can help you avoid attachment to products or practices that are increasingly outdated.4. TechnologyThink about an interaction with a colleague or friend that was profoundly impactful. Did it happen over text or an emaille? Unlikely. If you need to make a convincing argument, elicit assistance, make a difficult decision, or deliver an apology, technology is an aid, not the vehicle for communication. Make an effort this year to set your phone down, walk out of your office, and engage with people face-to-face. Of course, seeking worthwhile and meaningful interactions with colleagues is only one reason to let tech go w hen possible, but theres also an argument for increased productivity. How many minutes a day do you lose to mindless scrolling on Facebook? How long does it take you to coin the perfect Instagram caption?Im not saying to abandon your apps, but to look at how much time you spend on them. Wrest back control of your time before your boss takes note of your distractions. Youll likely be amazed at how your productivity blossoms when you control your use of technology instead of the other way around. This is certainly not a comprehensive list of all the things you might consider ditching. Most of us have habits, relationships, beliefs, and practices that warrant occasional scrutiny to determine if they still have a place in our lives. If you havent considered this before now, its a good time to review your plans to determine what you want to add, and what you want to leave behind to make this your best professional year yet.

5 ways to focus in the dog days of summer

5 ways to focus in the dog days of summer5 ways to focus in the dog days of summerWe hate to break this news to you, Ferris Bueller, but unfortunately, hoping and wishing for an adult summer-vacation wont result in much but wanderlust. Throw in the added addition of many events and the fact that kiddos are out of school - and staying treugesinnt to your job responsibilities becomes that much stickier.During the summer months, longer days and extra activities in our personal lives can cause focus and productivity at the office to wane. Weddings, trips, family reunions - and, if youre a working parent, the dreaded days when schools out for summer mean extra planning for the kids that add to the already-frenzied hustle, explains career expert and entrepreneur Autumn Manning. She also adds that depending on what part of the country you live in, you may have just spent the winter months cooped up indoors and are now dying to be outdoors enjoying the sunshine as much as possible. All thes e factors can influence your productivity at work this season.Since most professions still require your attention year-round, it is important to find ways to stay focused, organized and on-task, even when the sunshine beaming outside your office window is mora than tempting. Heres how to keep yourself accountablePrioritize your dayMuch like with your personal finance budget, your upcoming European getaway or your mounting list of errands, staying organized at work helps to hold your attention and set your priorities. Career expert and entrepreneur Christopher Kingman recommends any sort of system that ensures your success- and ahem, attention span.Depending on your working style and flow, you might color-code your calendar, set up blocks where you can dig through emails instead of being dragged into yet another meeting or even staying a bit later to enjoy a quieter office. To get started, make a thorough list of all of your upcoming deliverables, in order of importance and deadline. Then, you can map out how youll finish everything smoothly, effectively and smartly. Not only will this make you super productive and impactful, which you know, youre company may appreciate, but more importantly youll be laser focused throughout the day, which makes you less likely to get distracted, he says. Just be sure to factor in a 15 minute break or two, not including lunch to mentally check out. Sometimes your brain could use a breather as well.Shift your working hoursHow buttoned-up is your culture? If you lean more casual, Manning says to think outside of the traditional perimeters and see how much leeway your manager will give you with working days and hours. This might mean coming in a hour earlier so you can leave in team to savor more vitamin D, or even bargaining for a few summer Fridays a month. Many organizations now realize that flexibility in work hours and location isnt just good for the employee, but it brings major benefits to productivity and engagement, overall , she explains. Such a change will allow for more flexibility in how and where to get work done.Just keep in mind if they agree to this shift, it is up to you to prove you can self-motivate and discipline by checking in, setting a clear schedule and remaining communicative, no matter if youre working from a cubicle or a cabana on the beach.Keep yourself busyWhat your grandmother warned about idle hands and idle minds remains true when boredom seeps into your job, youre teetering into the danger zone of productivity. And for most industries, summer tends to be a tad more relaxed than other seasons, meaning it is often up to you to create the busy-work required for your mental and professional health. Kingman says now is the time to ask your manager for more responsibility or the opportunity to try a new project idea. The great part about doing this, especially asking your boss what else you could do, is it can help build up your reputation as a team player or someone who is truly inve sted in the company. Taking an active interest in furthering your knowledge of the company, especially during a slower time is a great way to show drive and ambition, he shares. If your manager comes up empty since they have their all-inclusive Mexico vacation on the brain? Kingman challenges professionals to find a hole in your companys dynamics - and fix it yourself.Chances are you know something thats broken, a process, a technology, anything. Start working on making it better, however you can. Whether it be by learning more and educating others, or diving into process diagrams and flows, its a safe bet your boss will appreciate the drive to make the improvement and those impacted by the problem will be as well, he adds.Spend more time outdoorsFrom walking meetings through the neighborhood to taking your lunch outside, Manning says even a few stolen moments in fresh air will do wonders for your psyche. Remember, youre not chained to your office or bound to your desk, so dont make your computer your excuse.Take advantage of the nice weather while at work. Get curious and ask yourself, how can I enjoy of the nice weather while Im at work? she suggests. Take a few minutes to step outside for a breather, go to lunch and sit outdoors with co-workers, or plan a team meeting for outside instead of in a conference room. Outdoor walking meetings always boost energy and offer a change of perspective, so try and incorporate these into your days.Play hooky for a dayConsider this your permission to feign a fever and finagle a stomach bug Kingman says one easy way to stay focused is to take a day and completely, totally, 100% tune out. This means leaving your iPhone at home, turning off email and giving your mind a breather.Whether you go for a run in the park, head to the beach or stay in bed all day, reading in your pajamas, exhaling can supercharge your creativity, pushing you to perform better once youre back in office. The simple act of unplugging may seem hard, but taking a day off to unwind, decompress and gather your thoughts may save you days or weeks down the road if you truly burn out. Taking small breaks for yourself is an easy and mindful way to ensure long-term sanity, he explains.Psst Take your me day on a Friday, so you have the whole weekend to thrive off the benefits.

Inspiration from the Basement

Inspiration from the Basement Inspiration from the Basement Mother Nature has inspired engineers in their work for years. The quickness of the cheetah, the flight of a bird, but the cricket?I was working in bioinspired locomotion and Ive always been interested in understanding locomotion with an engineering perspective and using high-speed videography and computational modeling, explains Rajat Mittal, professor of engineering at Johns Hopkins University. But, believe or not, he didnt start out thinking crickets would be a subject of study.Annoyance to AnalysisYou see, in some areas of the Northeast, especially where Mittal lives, basements have been overrun by crickets, he says. Ive had this problem and, as a homeowner, I was trying to figure out how to get rid of them. But I started looking at unterstellung crickets and they are incredible when it comes to jumping. Theyre jumping several meters and its something like fifty to sixty times the length of their body. When they jump, you see how they do it in relation to landing on their feet and it looked controlled. That was the genesis of this project Are these animals doing something interesting to stabilize themselves in the air?Mechanical engineering major Emily Palmer and Prof. Rajat Mittal at the testing lab. Image Johns Hopkins UniversityUsing high-speed video, there were 100 to 200 frames that basically covered the entire jump. The high-speed video system contained three cameras to get a view of the same area from three different directions. Building an acrylic enclosure, they jumped in the enclosure and the bottom surface had sandpaper for traction for the landing. Mittal said the hypothesis was that the configuration of the crickets body would turn out to be aerodynamically stable. In the end, it was found that the cricket minimizes drag and, about 30-40% of the way through they jump, they quickly transition from drag-minimizing confirmation, to aerodynamic stabilizing. They do this within a jump that wo uld be the equivalent of a human jumping about the length of a football field and its completed in less than half of a second.Jumping RobotsOne question was if these principals of aerodynamic stabilization could be streamlined to build very small-scale robots, he says. They could be potentially used in complicated domains, he says. Jumping in many situations can just be a mora effective mode of locomotion than crawling or flying. Lets say its a disaster earthquake situation or a fire search and rescue is ongoing. You might have people gathered in rubble, there are nooks and crannies possibly involved, and crawling robots would have a tough time getting over very jagged debris and rocks and the broken terrain. Flying robots take up a lot of energy and they may only have limited juice. But jumping robots could both potentially avoid getting stuck and also get to the areas you need. For Mittal, the work to this point has been extremely gratifying, with his team including undergraduate s tudents and a high school student. Every once in a while you find inspiration from something thats been right there in front of you the whole time, he says. Here, it was in my basement.Eric Butterman is an independent writer.Every once in a while you find inspiration from something thats been right there in front of you the whole time. Do You Really Need a Four-Year Degree

Do You Really Need a Four-Year Degree In 2013, the pay gap between college graduates and everyone else reached a record high Americans with four-year degrees made 98 percent mora per hour on average than people without a degree did.But college degrees still arent the normonly 46 percent of people ages 25-29 had completed an associates degree or higher as of 2015. Plus, it seems like everywhere you look, someone has a side hustle or is dabbling in entrepreneurship, which brings up the question Do you really need a four-year degree? There is no perfect one-size-fits-all answer. However, it is important to look at the benefits of obtaining a four-year degree. When youre debating whether a degree is right for you, ask yourself three questionsWhat do you want to do? What is your ideal job?Do you want to create something for yourself, or would you rather work for someone else? What degree(s) does your chosen field require? Is there aminimum level of education that you must attainin order to be successful in the field? What Do You Want to Do?This question is harder to answer than it looks, butit is the basis of determiningwhether or notlage you need a four-year degree. Figuring out what you want to do will help you understand the kind of education your chosen path requires. For instance, if you want to go into a creative field like art or music, you might be able toforgo the four-year degree in favor of a program that truly enhances your abilities through a nontraditional route. On the other hand, if you want to go into a STEM field, you most definitely need a four-year degree.Do You Want to Create Something for Yourself or Work forSomeone Else?Figuring out whether you want to create your own company or work for an established organization can help determine the amount of schooling youll need. While a four-year degree can bebeneficial in both instances, it will most certainly allow you to obtain higher wages if youre working for someone els e. If youre working for yourself, you can probably get by without a four-year degree. If you are trying to breakinto the corporate world or at least start out there a four-year degree will give you the foundation you need to obtain the kind of job(s) and salaryyou desire. What Kind of Degree Does Your Chosen Field Require?Once youve determined the path you want to take and/or thejob you want to obtain, go online and do some research. What kinds of degrees do your future coworkers hold? Do the jobs youre aiming for now or in the future require certain credentials? If so, what are the steps to earning those credentials? Do you need a minimum amount of education? The point is, some career paths require certain degrees. Look into this now to avoid problems down the road.So Do You Need a Degree? While there are people who can get by withouthaving a four year degree, having one will almost always benefit you. Furthermore, obtaining high-level jobs in almost any field will require at least a bachelors. The bottom line is ifan employer has to chose between you without a degree and an equally strong candidate who has a degree, they will almost always go with the degree-holding candidate. And, as mentioned earlier, degree-holders earn almost twice as much as their non-degree-holding counterparts. A college degree will not only help you learn more about yourself and your industry, but it will also allow you to earn more than your peers. If you have the opportunity, earninga four-year degree will benefit you in many ways, both socially and in the workforce. If you feel atraditional college education isnt for you, try exploring other options, such as online or community college classes.Ultimately, a college degree is not 100 percent necessary, but it will make your life easier in the long run. The Steve Jobs guide to manipulating people and getting what you want

The Steve Jobs guide to manipulating people and getting what you wantThe Steve Jobs guide to manipulating people and getting what you wantSteve Jobs is widely considered to be a genius, but everyone can learn a thing or two from his tactics.Jobs faced many obstacles to get Apple and Pixar off the ground. But he had a unique way of crafting his own reality, a distortion field hed use to persuade people that his personal beliefs were actually facts, which is how he pushed his companies forward. He also used a blend of manipulative tactics to ensure his victories, parteicularly in hauptplatineroom meetings with some of the most powerful company executives in the world. This guide is designed to teach you how to get what you want in life, or your career, using examples from Jobs life, many of which were detailed in Walter Isaacsons biography of the Apple cofounder.Follow Ladders on FlipmainboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuros cience, and morePitch with passion. People can be influenced by strong displays of emotionPitching welches a key part of Jobs repertoire, and it should be part of yours, too. The process of selling - yourself, or a product - is the key to getting others to buy into your ideas. Before Apple launched iTunes in 2001, Jobs met with dozens of musicians in the hopes of corralling record labels into going along with the iTunes plan. One of the people Jobs pitched to welches prominent trumpet player Wynton Marsalis.Marsalis said Jobs talked for two hours straight. He welches a man possessed, he said. After awhile, I started looking at him and not the computer, because I was so fascinated with his passion.Jobs also pitched ideas to his ad team with a similar passion to ensure that almost every ad they produced was infused with his emotion. The resulting commercials, like the 1984 ad and theiPod silhouette ads, helped Apple become much more than just a computer company.Being brutally honest w ill help you build a strong followingWhen Steve Jobs returned to Apple for his second stint in 1997, he immediately got to work trying to invigorate the company he started, which was suffering from too many products and too little direction.Jobs summoned Apples top employees to the auditorium, and, wearing shorts and sneakers, got up on stage and asked everyone to tell him whats wrong with this place. After some murmurings and bland responses, Jobs cut everyone off. Its the products So whats wrong with the products? Again, more murmurs. Jobs shouted, The productssuck Theres no sex in them anymorePeople would buy into Jobs ideas because he was always earnest about what he said. As he later told his biographer (emphasis ours) I dont think I run roughshod over people, but if something sucks, I tell people to their face. Its my job to be honest.I know what Im talking about, and I usually turn out to be right. Thats the culture I tried to create. We are brutally honest with each other, and anyone can tell me they think I am full of st and I can tell them the same Thats the ante for being in the room Youve got to be able to be super honest.Steve Jobs had an incredible work ethic. Jobs told his biographer that when he returned to Apple in 1996, he worked from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, since he was still also leading Pixars operations. He worked tirelessly, and suffered from kidney stones. But he insisted on motivating both companies by consistently showing up and pushing people to make the best products possible, and they respected him for it.Disarm people with seduction and flatteryWhether theyre working for you, or youre working for them, people continually seek approval for their actions - so they respond very well to affection. And if you keep giving it to them, theyll eventually crave it from you. From Isaacsons biography (emphasis ours)Jobs could seduce and charm people at will, and he liked to do so. People such as (former Apple CEOs) Amelio and Sculley allowe d themselves to believe that because Jobs was charming them, it meant that he liked and respected them. It was an impression that he sometimes fostered by dishing out insincere flattery to those hungry for it.But Jobs could be charming to people he hated just as easily as he could be insulting to people he liked.Claim all the good ideas are yours - and if youre reversing your position, get behind the new idea with full force. Memories of the past can be easily manipulatedSteve Jobs wasnt right all the time, but he was a master at convincing people he was. So how did he do it? He stood firmly in one position, and if your position was actually better than his, he wouldnt just acknowledge it Hed adopt your position as his own, which would throw you off balance.Bud Tribble, a former Mac engineer, had this to say in Jobs biography (emphasis ours)Just because he tells you something that is awful or great, it doesnt necessarily mean hell feel that way tomorrow. If you tell him a new idea, hell usually tell you that he thinks its stupid. But then, if he actually likes it, exactly one week later, hell come back to you and propose your idea to you, as if he thought of it.An example When Apple decided to open retail stores for its products, Jobs retail SVP Ron Johnson came up with the idea of a Genius Bar, which would be staffed with the smartest Mac people. At first, Jobs called the idea crazy. You cant call them geniuses. Theyre geeks, he said. They dont have the people skills to deliver on something called the genius bar. The next day, Apples general counsel was told to trademark the name Genius Bar.Make decisions quickly and definitively. You can (usually) always change things laterWhen it came to making new products, Apple rarely considered studies, surveys, and research. It was also rare for a major decision to take several months Jobs tended to get bored easily and was quick to go with his gut.In the case of the first iMacs, Jobs immediately decided Apple would re lease the new computers in a rainbow of candy colors.Jony Ive, Apples chief of design, said in most places that decision would have taken months. Steve did it in a half hour.On the same computer, iMac engineer Jon Rubinstein tried to argue that the iMac should come with a CD tray but Jobs detested CD trays and he really wanted a high-end slot drive. On that particular decision, Jobs was wrong - burning music could only be accomplished on CD trays, and as that trend took off, the first round of iMacs were left behind. But since Jobs was able to make quick decisions, the first iMacs shipped on time, and the second-generation desktops included the CD drive that could rip and burn music, which was the necessary peg Apple needed to launch iTunes and the iPod.Dont wait to fix problems. Fix them nowWhen Jobs was working with Pixar on Toy Story, which would be the first feature-length film created entirely with 3D animation, the first iteration of Woody the cowboy had gradually turned into a jerk, mainly through script edits handed down by Disney. But Jobs refused to let Disney, one of the biggest companies in the world, ruin Pixars original story. If something isnt right, you cant just ignore it and say youll fix it later, Jobs said. Thats what other companies do.Jobs insisted that Disney give the reins back to Pixar, and in the end, Woody became a very likeable and thee-dimensional character (no pun intended) in Toy Story, which went on to be a monumental success.Another example When Jobs was designing the first Apple Store, his retail VP Ron Johnson woke up in the middle of a night before a big meeting with an excruciating thoughtThey had organized the stores completely wrong.Apple had previously organized the stores by the types of products being sold, but Johnson realized Apple needed to organize the store basedaround what people might want to dowith those products.Johnson told Jobs his epiphany the next morning, and after a brief eruption from Jobs, the Apple CE O told all who attended that days meeting that Johnson was absolutely right, and they needed to redo the entire layout, which delayed the planned rollout by 3-4 months. Weve only got one chance to get it right, Jobs said. There are two ways to deal with problematic people Either address them head on Jobs often saw the world through binary terms A person was either a hero or a bozo, a product was either amazing or st.He wanted Apple to be a company of A players, which meant regularly cutting B and C players, or pushing them with great fervor - bullying them, to some extent - to become A players. Before Apple launched the Macintosh, one of the engineers charged with building a mouse that could easily move the cursor in every direction - not just up/down and left/right - told Bill Atkinson, one of the early Apple employees who developed graphics for the Mac, that there was no way to build such a mouse commercially. After Jobs heard about the complaint over dinner, Atkinson arrived at work the next day only to discover Jobs had fired the engineer. The first words said by the engineers replacement were, I can build the mouse. Or follow the line of least involvement and ignore them entirelyJobs did not like overly complex issues, especially if they required him to make accommodations. So on occasion, he would become totally aloof. As Jobs biographer Walter Isaacson said, Jobs would go silent and ignore situations that made him uncomfortable.Jobs used this tactic, which was extremely effective, on several occasions When Apples then-CEO Gil Amelio asked what role he wanted to play in the company after he rejoined via the NeXT acquisition - Jobs couldnt say I want your job, after all - and when he wasnt sure how to deal with his estranged daughter Lisa.Chrisann Brennan, the mother of Jobs daughter Lisa, described this tactic to Jobs biographer (again, emphasis ours)There was a community of people who wanted to preserve his Woodside house due to its historical value , but Steve wanted to tear it down and build a home with an orchard. Steve let that house fall into so much disrepair and decay over a number of years that there was no way to save it.The strategy he used to get what he wanted was to simply follow the line of least involvement and resistance. So by his doing nothing on the house, and maybe even leaving the windows open for years, the house fell apart. Brilliant, no?Strike when the irons hot, and strike hardSuccess usually tricks people into thinking they can stop working Jobs had a much different point of view. When his big bet on Pixar paid off, and the companys first movie Toy Story was a huge success with critics and the box office, Jobs decided to take the company public.Investment bankers said it couldnt happen, especially after Pixar had hemorrhaged money for five years prior. Even John Lasseter, Pixars creative head, told Jobs he should wait until after Pixars second film. But Jobs insisted.Steve overruled me and said we needed the cash so we could put up half the money for our films and renegotiate the Disney deal, Lasseter told Jobs biographer. And thats exactly what happened. Pixar held its IPO one week after Toy Story opened in theaters, and it was a wild success It exceeded Netscape as the biggest IPO of 1995, and more importantly, it meant Pixar no longer needed to be dependent on Disney to finance its movies. Suddenly, Disney, with its flailing animation department, needed Pixar, instead of the other way around. The Mickey Mouse company would later realize this fact, and pay $7.4 1000000000000 to acquire Pixar - effectively making Jobs the biggest shareholder of Disney, keeping Pixar independent, and also saving Disneys once-great animation department in the process. When you have leverage, use itIt was huge news when Steve Jobs returned to Apple, the company he helped start but had since lost its magic. Jobs insisted he was only an advisor to Apple at the time, but those in and around Apple knew he was really in control. Apples then-CEO Gil Amelio depended on Jobs for the companys vision moving forward. So,on his first Thursday back at Apple, Jobs used this newfound leverage to his advantageHe called a board meeting and demanded Apple reprice its stock options by lowering the exercise price to make them valuable again. It was legal at the time, but not considered good business, at least ethically. But even after the board of directors balked at the idea, saying a study would take at least two months, Jobs fired back. You brought me here to fix this thing, and people are the key Guys, if you dont want to do this, Im not coming back on Monday. Because Ive got thousands of key decisions to make that are far more difficult than this, and if you cant throw your support behind this kind of decision, I will fail. So if you cant do this, Im out of here, and you can blame it on me, you can say, Steve wasnt up for the job.The board gave Jobs what he wanted. But Jobs didnt stop there The next day, he demanded all the board members resign, or else Im going to resign and not come back on Monday. He said all the board members had to go, except for Ed Woolard, and thats exactly what happened. By being able to choose his own board members - and act independently from them - he had the power to control Apples next projects, which made it possible for gadgets like the iPod to exist.Demand perfection, and dont settle for anything lessJobs detested anyone who was ready to make compromises to get a product out on time and on budget. He found adequacy to be morally appalling.Jobs goal for Apple was never to simply beat competitors, or even to make money it was to make the greatest product possible, or even a little greater. He was demanding about everything When the Macintosh booted up too slowly, he badgered the engineer responsible, equating the situation to a matter of life or death. He worked with countless artists and advertising agencies to make sure Apples ads had the r ight feel, and that the imagery and the audio synced up perfectly. Of the iPod engineers, he demanded the ability to access any function on the music player with three button presses, and no more. He insisted the production process for all Apple computers be shaved down from four months to two. Each one of these individual decisions could be considered nitpicks, but when put all together, Apple created a cult-like following unlike any other. Unlike other tech companies that had come and gone, customers and loyal fans felt like Apple put their interests first, and they were, as a result, willing to pay high prices for those products.Steve created the only lifestyle brand in the tech industry, Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison told Jobs biographer. There are cars people are proud to have - Porsche, Ferrari, Prius - because what I drive says something about me. People feel the same way about an Apple product. This article originally appeared on Business Insider. You might also enjoyNew neu roscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from kleine Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality

Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality As Pride month comes to a close and we release our latest Law Diversity Rankings, we thought it would be great time to take a look at the progress that’s been made in LGBT equality in the workplace. Below is a list of 10 companies in law, banking, accounting, tech, and other industries that have made great strides in promoting LGBT equality, diversity, and fairness. Ropes Gray LLP Vault's #1 Law Firm for LGBT Individuals From an insider: “The percentage of Ropes attorneys who are LGBT far exceeds the percentage of people who are LGBT in the general population.” This year, the law firm had a Pride month celebration with a gender pride panel discussion.   Google Perhaps one of the most well-known companies for having an “inclusive” culture, Google has made it a mission to focus on diversity of all kinds. In 2013, the search giant renewed its diversity initiative and shifted its focus to the more difficult task at hand- inclusivity. Through numerous programs, both internal and external, Google’s diversity numbers have risen throughout the years, and retention has improved. Today, over 65 percent of employees have participated in unbiasing trainings, and all new Googlers and managers participate. Furthermore, the company has even put unbiasing into its employees' hands- now all Googlers can personally create a training for their team. Goldman Sachs Vault's #1 Banking Firm for LGBT Individuals From an insider: “Diversity is about more than formal policies; it’s about the culture of the employees and how people act under tough situations. Here’s a revealing example that I think highlights the firm’s commitment. I was at a client dinner where the senior relationship manager thought he had overheard a homophobic comment from a key client. After the dinner, he had rushed over to check what had actually been said, whether I thought it was offensive to me (as a gay man), and offered to discuss with the client and even end the relationship.” Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver Jacobson LLP Vault's  #2 Law Firm for LGBT Individuals From an insider: “The firm is exceptional in supporting women, minorities, and LGBT individuals. There are affinity groups with generous budgets for women attorneys, minority attorneys, and LGBT attorneys, and the firm promotes the hiring of diverse candidates.” BPM Vault's #1 Accounting Firm for LGBT Individuals From an insider: “Culture is taken very seriously here and that includes maintaining a culture of respect. I am a queer woman and feel completely supported in being myself here. There was an incident with an outside trainer being culturally inappropriate toward immigrants and women, and my firm handled it swiftly and professionally. I was really impressed by that.” The Boston Consulting Group, Inc. Vault's  #1 Consulting Firm for Diversity From an insider: “Diversity is one of BCG's recruiting goals. When looking for candidates, BCG encourages us to be mindful and attract people with diverse backgrounds, ethnicity, gender, etc.” Nike Nike made a splash back in 2012 when it launched its Pride month collection that features specialty shoes and clothing called “BETRUE’. Since then, the grassroots program has raised over $2.5 million for LGBTQ causes in the US. This year, Nike partnered with athlete superstars LeBron James, Serena Williams, Kevin Durant, Michael B. Jordan, and more to create a video advocating for LGBT equality, with a featured song by Alicia Keys.     Starbucks Over the years, Starbucks has done numerous things to raise LGBT awareness, including publicly applauding the Supreme Court’s ruling on marriage equality, turning hundreds of Starbucks locations into LGBT safe spaces, and partnering with Lady Gaga and her Born This Way Foundation to create drink specials during Pride month. Since creating its first LGBT affinity group in 1996, the company has promoted equality in its stores and communities throughout the world. O'Melveny Myers LLP Vault's #3 Law Firm for LGBT Individuals From an insider: “As an LGBT lawyer, I can say that I felt like I had a family at OMM from day one, and the firm has been incredibly supportive of LGBT-causes. The day after the Orlando shooting, our firm put up a large rainbow flag in our front lobby, and our firm engages in tons of LGBT-related pro bono work. We also have a large number of LGBT partners, and our LGBT affinity group is very active.” Airbnb Most recently, the company that’s single-handedly changed the way people view rental accommodations has created another clause in its pledge- to eliminate any discrimination by its hosts. The company has also publicly stood for same sex marriage, particularly in Australia, where same sex marriage is not yet legal and where Airbnb has released this type of ad.

Wake up 1 hour earlier and youll be 100X more productive (over time)

Wake up 1 hour earlier and you’ll be 100X more productive (over time) Wake up 1 hour earlier and you’ll be 100X more productive (over time) “Lose an hour in the morning, and you will spend all day looking for it.” Richard  WhatelyThe difference between waking up at 5 AM and waking up at 6 AM  (or at 6 AM instead of 7 AM)  may not seem like a very big deal. However, when you look at the compounding effects over time, you’ll be shocked at how much that one hour could do to your life. Not only the compounding effects but when you look at the ripple effects into all other areas, you’ll also be stunned.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  Here are a few reasons why this one hour can make such a big difference: The ideas  you get when you are up earlier  are not available to you  if you wake up later The time  for concentrated action is  not available  later The confidence  you build by putting first-things-first is  not available  later The compounding effects  and their unpredictable but natural byproducts (such as relationships, opportunities, etc.) are  not available  later Most people wake up at the absolute latest time they have to, based on their busy schedule. They purposefully don’t leave themselves much time. They definitely don’t leave themselves time for thinking, meditating, reflecting, visualizing, learning, exercising, or  creating.Compound effects: You miss ideas by missing that 1 hour“Tell me how you use your spare time, and how you spend your money, and I will tell you where and what you will be in ten years from now.” Napoleon HillWhen you wake up in a hurry, you miss  million dollar ideas. When you wake up in a hurry, over time, you actually miss  millions of ideas. Think about it, if you got 10 extra ideas during that one hour of alone time, that would be 3,650 over a year. Over 50 years, that would be 182,500 ideas. But over those 50 years, you’d become a much different person. If you actually started getting up early and getting new and better ideas, and then acting on those ideas, you’d develop a new brain and personality.T his would lead to more and better ideas. So, over those 50 years, you’d increasingly become  more creative. You’d become a better thinker. Your actions would become better. Your goals would become more clarified. You’d become more courageous at acting on your ideas. You’d develop more capabilities, skills, and confidence over time. Thus, your ideas wouldn’t just increase by 3,650 every year. Actually, using a compounding interest calculator: if you multiplied those 3,650 ideas (or dollars) by 5% over 50 years, and if the compounding effect occurred 4 times per year,  every quarter, then you’d actually end up with 812,800.39 ideas. As you’ll notice in the image below, I made the starting place 10, because if you start today, you could have 10 new ideas. There’s something compounding interest doesn’t fully take into account, though, and that’s opportunity cost and opportunity expansion.Let’s just say you get 10 new good ideas per day. But over time, the  quality  of those ideas become 10X or 100X better. The truth is, you’re actually already having thousands of thoughts daily. It’s the quality of those thoughts that matters. 95% of your thoughts recur daily. Albert Einstein said,  â€œWe cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”When your brain becomes more creative, when you have more knowledge, skills, connections, and confidence then the value of each potential idea could become millions of dollars. But if you never give yourself the time and space to get those ideas, then you’ll never experience this effect on your mind. Also, if you never give yourself the t ime to act on your ideas, then you’ll never witness how thoughts can become things. You have the innate power to harness your mind to create. The more creative you become, the more abundant you become. You start to realize that what you send out into the world in the form of thoughts, emotions, deeds comes back to you (some have called this the law of the boomerang).Ripple effects: You will fundamentally change as a personYou also start to realize that by small and simple means, great things occur. The small act of waking up one hour early, over time, will change every area of your life. It will change you as a person in fundamental and profound ways.In the book,  The Power of Habit, Charles Duhigg explains the idea of “keystone habits.” A keystone habit is one change you make in your life that then goes on to change everything else. From a systems perspective, the idea is:  when you change a part of any system, you change the whole system. When you begin waking up one hour earli er, you’ll start to think better. You’ll start to knock out those things you’ve wanted to do, but have been procrastinating. You’ll have more time for meditation, reflection, and prayer. So, you’ll likely become more spiritual. You’ll start to look at your whole life differently and begin noticing things you didn’t see before. You’ll see where things have gotten out of control and disorganized. You’ll begin to see all of the time you waste on stuff that doesn’t matter. Most importantly, you’ll begin to realize that the entire system of your life is generating the results you’re currently getting. You’ll see that your whole life is based on ideas, stories, and assumptions that are incredibly limited. You’ll see that how your family is currently operating could be 10X or 100X better with more intention, time together, and a totally different way of interacting. You’ll see that, in order to create new and better experiences with your family, you’ll need more time with them and ways to earn more money. Therefore, your current job and lifestyle will have to change.Because your awareness and motivation and vision are expanding, new ideas will start to come your way. The degree to which you nourish those ideas through courageous action will determine if the ideas go away or come with greater force. The more action you take on your ideas, the more they will come. The more action you take on your ideas, the more you will change as a person.Small ideas like buying flowers for your wife on the way home from work, looking her deep in the eyes, and telling her how much you love and appreciate her will change your life.Acting on those ideas leads to other ideas. It’s usually the idea after the idea that brings the most gold. But if you don’t act on the first, you’ll never be in a place to experience the second, or third, or fourth.Experiences are the doorways to better ideas.Experiences reshape your confidence, imagination, and future. The more powerful experiences you start having, the more you’ll upgrade your thinking and your life.Over a handful of years of living and thinking better, you’ll have a totally different life. You could be making millions of dollars. You could have an absolutely amazing family. You could be living your dreams. And from there, you could then really begin thinking about how you could make this world a better place. How to become 100X more productive (and successful)Thinking 10X or ever 100X bigger isn’t that strange when you start living by different rules. When you start using your time better, you begin making more time. Even though we all have 24 hours in the same day, those 24 hours are not the same. Einstein made it abundantly clear that time is RELATIVE.Time is relative to each person. For some people, making $1 million dollars, at their current rate, would take 20 years. For others, making $1 million dollars can occur in a single day.So although we all have 24 hours, the possibiliti es of and within those 24 hours are quite different. When you give yourself 1 extra hour per day, you are potentially expanding your time and potential by 10X, initially. You’ll start getting new and better ideas. You’ll start taking action on the stuff you’ve have been procrastinating. As a result of getting better ideas and taking action, you’ll begin developing confidence in yourself, which will immediately expand how you see yourself and your future. Thus, you’ll start setting bigger goals and striving for better things.Your increasing confidence will ripple into the other areas of your life. How you do anything is often how you do everything. Thus, you’ll start to become more organized in your business. You’ll start to become more caring and thoughtful in your relationships. You’ll start to organize yourself and your life to match your highest values.Over 5â€"10 years, you could easily be making 10X what you’re making now by doing this. How you spend your time and where you live could be different.Over 10â€"20 years, you could easily be making 100X what you’re making now by doing this.Over time, compounding effects can be huge.Over time, ripple effects become huge. Conclusion: The two easiest ways to build unstoppable confidenceThe two easiest ways to build unstoppable confidence are: Starting the day right Ending the day right Starting the day right is easier than ending the day right. A lot of people are starters, but few people are finishers. Hence, many people end even what would have been a good day by binging on TV and junk food.Going to bed a few minutes later than you could have because you were mindlessly wandering on FB is not how you build confidence. If you end your day with negative momentum, that will subconsciously affect you during your sleep. That negative momentum will affect your confidence and decision-making ability the next morning.Anyone who has learned to master their mornings also learned the importance of their evenings. You don’t want to wake up earlier without adjusting your sleep schedule. The idea isn’t less sleep. It’s sleeping at the optimal time given your situation in life. Many people will complain about the idea of not being able to go to bed an hour earlier. But with some self-examination, it wouldn’t take a lot of rearranging to adjust their schedule for one hour. We all waste way more than one hour per day. And usually, in our evenings, we waste several. Those evening hours could be re-allocated, and when done so, the return could be astronomic.Building confidence requires that you continually start and end your days better. You end your days better by engaging in better activities. You don’t have to eat junk food and waste your time at night. You could be present with your family. You could do some learning, or recovering in better ways.Going to bed having spent your time in meaningful ways is powerful.Laying your head on your pillow and knowing you spent your night on your highest values and priorities is how you build your confidence. That confidence will ripple HUGE into your next morning.Over time, you’ll find yourself as a different person with a totally different life. You’ll have a bigger imagination. You’ll have more confidence. Your daily behaviors and thinking will be totally upgraded. Your relationships, opportunities, and goals will be enormously bigger and different than you can presently imagine. Your lifestyle and environment will be inspiring. You can do this. You have so much to lose if you don’t.Small and simple things create HUGE change. One hour per day will change your whole life.Ready to upgrade? I’ve created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. You follow this daily, your life will change very quickly. Army 88M Motor Transport Operator Responsibilities

Army 88M Motor Transport Operator Responsibilities Army 88M Motor Transport Operator Responsibilities Motor transport operators in the Army do what the job title suggests: they operate wheeled vehicles (so, cars and trucks but not tanks or planes) to transport Army cargo and personnel. It may not be the most high-adrenaline or high-profile job in the armed services, but motor transport operators play a key role in keeping the Army moving and getting things from Point A to Point B both  on and off the battlefield.   This important job is categorized as military operational specialty (MOS) 88M.   Duties of MOS 88M Theres a long list of duties for Army motor transport operators. In addition to operating all wheel vehicles and equipment over all different types of terrain, they manage the loading and unloading of personnel and cargo being transported, whether in a vehicle or via a trailer.   These soldiers are tasked with using defense techniques to protect convoys, and managing and correcting any malfunctions or problems with vehicles. They prep vehicles for movement, such as readying a Jeep being transported via cargo plane or ship.   And Army motor transport operators oversee the safety of not only their vehicles but their cargo and passengers as well. Its up to them to make sure any transport operations go smoothly from start to finish. Training for Army Motor Transport Operators Soldiers in this MOS take the requisite ten weeks of Basic Combat Training and seven weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT). These soldiers divide their training between the classroom and real-world simulation, like most MOS training regimens. For this job, soldiers will spend more than 200 training hours driving vehicles in field training environments. Requirements To qualify for MOS 88M, you’ll need to score an 85 in the operators and food (OF) aptitude area of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test. Theres no Department of Defense security clearance required for this position, but you must be free of colorblindness and have a valid state drivers license that wont expire before you complete your AIT.   While the Army will provide all the training, youll need to succeed in this role, having experience in driver education and an interest in driving and vehicle mechanics will serve you well in your training and beyond.   Similar Civilian Occupations The skills you learn as an Army motor transport operator prepare you for numerous post-military careers, including positions with trucking, moving or bus companies, or with businesses that have their own delivery fleets. Youll be able to consider a future as a tractor-trailer truck, tank truck, and heavy truck or bus driver.

What to Know Before Making a Career Change at 40

What to Know Before Making a Career Change at 40 What to Know Before Making a Career Change at 40 At age 40, you are almost two decades into your career. If you have continued to work in the same occupation in which you started, you have a great deal of experience by this point. You may have even made progress climbing up the ladder. Theres no telling how far you will go if you stay in the same career. Pity is, you dont particularly like what youre doing. Or maybe, you have realized you actually cant advance any further and, in spite of the fact that you do like your career, you dont want to get stuck in a dead end. What can you do? You may be worried that its too late to make a career change. Although it may sound trite, its never too late.  That doesnt mean your transition will be simple or that you can make it without a great deal of effort. Change is hard, even if you prepare well for it. The truth is, though, that going to work every day to do something you dont enjoy, or that isnt gratifying, is far more difficult. Weighing some of the positives and negatives of making a career change at 40 can help you get started with your decision-making process. What's Good Increased confidence at this age can help you make a switch more easily Even if you need to retrain for a new career, you still have 25 years to work in it before you reach retirement age A good career change can positively affect your health and relationships You can leverage your current experience into transferable skills What's Difficult Handling the change if you still have younger children at home Continuing to make enough money to cover mortgage and higher annual expenses May need to take time off from your current job to prepare for a new career Conversely, may need to continue full-time work while preparing for a new career Whats Good About Making a Career Change? Many people report an increase in confidence when they turn 40. Could there be a better time to make a career change than when you feel like you can take on whatever comes your way?   If you are planning to retire, as many people do, at 65, you still have 25 years of work  in your future. Even if it takes you a couple of years to prepare for a different occupation, you will have over two decades left to spend a satisfying career, if all goes as planned. And if due to financial needs, you have to work until you are over 65, you will be thankful to be doing something you enjoy. A career change will affect your life, health, and relationships. Not only is being in the wrong career stressful, deciding whether to make the transition can be overwhelming. Once you figure out what you are going to do, it will probably come as a great relief. What Makes It Difficult? Forty-year-olds have many responsibilities that could make this transition more difficult than changing careers at 30 would have been. At age 40, you are more likely to have children for whom you are financially responsible. You may have purchased a house during the last few years and have a mortgage to pay. The National Association of Realtors reports that the median age of first-time homebuyers was 32 in 2016 (First-time Buyers, Single Women Gain Traction in NARs 2016 Buyer and Seller Survey. National Association of Realtors. 2016).   Annual expenses are higher for 35 to 44-year-olds than they are for 25 to 34-year-olds. Approximately $7,900 goes toward food, $20,600  toward housing, and $3,200 toward healthcare  (3 Reasons  Youll Spend More at 40 Than at 30. CNN Money, August 3, 2016). Unlike a 30-year-old who may spend $6,200 on food, $17,900 on housing, and $2,200 on healthcare per year, a 40-year-old may  have to dip into savings if he or she intends to take time off from work to prepare for a new career. Alternatively, one may have to continue to work in his or her current occupation while getting ready for a new one. How to Make the Change Try not to be discouraged by the difficulties involved in making a midlife career change.  If you decide  you want to make this transition, try to find a way to do it that fits with your current life situation. It may take a bit longer than it would have if you were ten years younger, but if you do it right, it will likely be worthwhile. Since this will be an effortful endeavor, it is ever so important to make sure you put a lot of thought into choosing a new career. A self-assessment, your first step in the career planning process, will allow you to learn about your interests, personality type, aptitudes, and work-related values. What you discover at age 40 may be quite different than what you would have unearthed had you done this assessment when you were younger. So, if you remember taking a career test when you were in high school or college, dont bother looking for your results.  Do it again. When you have completed this step, you will end up with a list of suitable options. Take time to explore the occupations on your list and even consider doing an adult internship. Your self-assessment may indicate that a career is a good match for you based on your traits, but at age 40, you have other things to consider. For example, your financial responsibilities might not allow you to commit a lot of money to  training and education. With a family to care for, spending a lot of time studying may not be something you can or want to do right now. Speaking of preparation, while you still have approximately 25 years left of your career, you may not want to wait several years before you can begin working in your new occupation. If you want to transition into a new career fairly quickly, look for one that doesnt require a lot of additional preparation or education. Leveraging Your Past Work One of the best things about your accumulated years of work is that you have a lot of experience. You may be thinking, What good will my experience do if I change to a new career? Two words: transferable skills. These are talents and abilities you have acquired from doing one type of work that you can use in another. For some careers, you may even be able to substitute your transferable skills for formal training. When deciding between a career that requires additional schooling and one for which you can use your transferable skills, you may decide to choose the latter. It will allow you to transition more quickly and with less effort, at an age when you may want to limit your expenditure of  time, energy, or money. Thats not to say you shouldnt choose an occupation for which you will need to prepare formally, but its nice to have options. Gather Job Information In addition to getting the facts about educational requirements, also learn about job duties,  the economic outlook for your chosen position, and median earnings. You can find a good amount of this and other related information on the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS.gov) website. Once you have gathered all your data, evaluate it to decide which occupations are most suitable. Compare job duties to decide which ones you like and which you dont. If there are any tasks you cant see yourself performing- remember you dont have to love every one of them, but you must be willing to do it- remove the occupation from your list. Make sure the jobs salary will cover your expenses, let you contribute to savings, and allow you to do things you enjoy, for example, travel. You must also consider the job outlook because if your ability to get a job will be limited, another occupation will be a better choice.

4 tested and failed side hustles

4 tested and failed side hustles 4 tested and failed side hustles When Side Hustles Don’t Go As Planned…My husband says I’m always scheming. No, I’m not a super-villain - what he means is that I am always looking for new and better ways to make money. I’ve tried a lot of different methods to pull in cash over the years, and some have worked, but many have failed.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Today I’d like to share with you some of those tested and failed side hustles, so you don’t have to make the same mistakes I did.(NOTE: My results are not indicative of everyone’s results. This is about my experience.)Tested and Failed Side HustlesRev.com Transcription ServicesRev is an online transcription service where clients can submit audio files. People like you and I transcribe them. I was attracted to Rev because you don’t need to buy any special transcription equipment or have any prior experience to get started. All you need is your two hands, a reliable internet connection, and some time.Likes Signing up was a relatively straightforward process. You get paid via PayPal. No waiting on checks or dealing with deposits. There is no schedule or quota. You can work as much as you want and whenever you want. There are lots of training articles and resources if you have questions. You don’t need to download any special software. The transcription editor is embedded right into their website. Dislikes The quality of the audio is usually pretty poor. I had a hard time understanding what people were saying most of the time. Other, more experienced Revvers grade your materials. This led to some inconsistencies in grading because different people grade each submission. You are paid by the audio minute, not the real-life minute. Particularly when the sound quality is terrible, you may find yourself spending an hour on a job that is paying you for ten minutes. Not good. I felt a lot of pressure to get every word right, which was sometimes impossible. Since the grading was inconsistent, I never knew if I was going to get dinged for something that I legitimately couldn’t hear properly. Why It FailedWhile I think Rev is a good concept and I loved the flexibility, I just didn’t find that the pay was worth the time and frustration. You do have to option to purchase and use special transcription equipment that may help with streamlining the process and filtering lousy audio, but I wasn’t willing to spend the money.I don’t see Rev as a huge money maker if you’re trying to improve your financial situation. Hard pass.Selling on AmazonBack when I first started selling on eBay, I also tried to branch out into Amazon. I only sold one or two things before I went back to eBay exclusively, and I haven’t looked back since.Likes Amazon’s prices tend to skew higher than eBay’s so you can ask more for your items. Buyers on Amazon are less skeptical and don’t pay much attention to your seller rating. You can go on Amazon and sell immediately, whereas on eBay you have to spend time building up feedback before you’ll get consistent sales. Some argue that your items will get more exposure on Amazon because more people shop there than on eBay. I never tested this theory myself, but it could be true. Amazon is kind of taking over the world. Dislikes Amazon requires you to get approval to sell in most of their categories. However, Amazon doesn’t grant authorization in many categories. As a result, you end up with very few categories in which you can sell. Some categories are nearly impossible to get into because they are already saturated with sellers. Amazon has a lot of rules. For example, if you submit a photo of your product, it needs to have a background with a particular shade of white, so it blends in with their homepage. This requires a lot of photo editing, which takes up way too much time. You need permission from many brands to sell their products. For example, I bought some really nice men’s polo shirts from Ralph Lauren online. I had a receipt to prove that they were legitimate, but Amazon wanted me to provide a letter, from Ralph Lauren, stating that I have permission to distribute their brand. Clearly, that wasn’t something I was going to be able to get, so I was unable to sell my polos on Amazon. Bummer. Their website is not user-friendly. eBay is so easy that even my Dad (a man who still types with his two index fingers) can do it. I just couldn’t figure out Amazon’s process, especially when trying to print shipping labels. Payment isn’t instantly sent to your PayPal account like it is on eBay. You have to wait until Amazon pays out. I think the intervals may have been every couple of weeks, but I can’t remember exactly. Amazon buyers are generally looking for new items. This knocks out a large part of my inventory. While I do have some new items, there are so many restrictions that I couldn’t list most of them. Why It FailedThe single thing that deterred me the most from selling on Amazon were all the restrictions. I was unable to find items I was allowed to sell, and I lacked the time and patience to beg my way into categories.Direct SalesI had one experience with direct sales, and it will be my last. Misguidedly, I signed up for Mary Kay back when I was about 23-24 years old. I paid about $100 to buy a product kit after attending one of their free facials with my sister. It failed horribly. I blame my young age and naivety.Likes Being able to buy their products at a discount for myself. Dislikes You have to be that annoying person on Facebook, peddling your wares to your friends and family. Hosting those stupid home parties, where people only buy things because they feel guilted into doing so. You’re expected to call local businesses and ask if you can set up a display in their store to harass their customers into buying your products. You’re also expected to set up little boxes at said local businesses for people to enter to “win” a free facial. Note: you don’t need to win a free facial to receive one. You need to request to host a party. The facial is always free. The products are expensive. Time away from home. Hosting parties, setting up displays, and handing out samples requires you to put on pants and be out in the world. I enjoy making money from the comfort of my couch, where pants are optional. Why It FailedI don’t like to harass or guilt people into buying products that they don’t want or need. I don’t know why I thought that I would be successful at direct sales, because I don’t even like when salespeople come up to me in clothing stores to ask if I need help.Further, I questioned the practice of offering free facials as prizes when they were available for free upon request at any time. I found it misleading. When I expressed my concern, my supervisor became extraordinarily defensive and basically told me that if I didn’t like it, leave. I accepted her invitation to move on, and that was the end of my career in direct sales.Selling baked goodsBaking has always been one of my favorite things to do. I’ve sold a few cheesecakes to friends over the years, so I thought that it might be a good idea to try to start my own baked goods business. I don’t really have likes or dislikes list for this one because I never managed to get it off the ground. Why It FailedBasic ally, the source of all my problems was that I couldn’t bake at home. Pennsylvania home-based food business rules* state that your kitchen has to be able to pass their health inspection. Because I have two indoor cats, that wasn’t going to happen. Baking at home was out.I did try to find another venue before I gave up ultimately, but commercial kitchens are scarce and expensive in my area. Renting the kitchen time wasn’t all that outrageous, but renting space to store my ingredients was going to be the problem. I called the Health Department to see if it was possible to buy a separate freezer and save my ingredients at home, but that was not possible.I also called around to local churches to see if renting their kitchens was an option, but their insurance didn’t cover outside people using it. Because I didn’t want to invest a bunch of money into something that I wasn’t sure was going to be successful yet, I gave up on the idea.*Each state has different health code rules, so if you’re thinking of trying a home-based food business, check your state’s regulations.Should I Avoid These Tested and Failed Side Hustles Entirely? That’s really up to you. If you read what I wrote today and still want to give it a go, you should. Plenty of people are successful at these ventures, and if you think you have what it takes, I say go for it. Hopefully, if you’re thinking about trying one of the above and you’re still on the fence, my experience will help sway you in one direction or the other. That’s the great thing about side hustlesâ€"they aren’t your primary income. If one isn’t working out for you, then just quit and try another. You really need to find a side hustle that is personalized to you and is something that you’re going to enjoy. After all, if we’re all mostly miserable at our real jobs, we can’t be unhappy at our side hustles too. This article first appeared on Money Geek.

Here is the number 1 reason people dont succeed

Here is the number 1 reason people don’t succeed Here is the number 1 reason people don’t succeed “When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure.” - Marilyn StrathernThere is a law in statistics known as Goodhart’s law, named after the economist Charles Goodhart, which proposes that people often focus on the wrong target, mistakenly believing it was the right metric. As an example, a manager of a call center may make the target the number of calls made, believing that the number of calls made will translate to sales. The people who make the most calls then are the ones awarded, even though a sheer number of calls may or may not translate to the real goal: which may be pleasing the customer or number of sales. This is rewarding A while trying to get B.Why does this matter?According to Dan Sullivan, the founder of Strategic Coach, the reason most people don’t succeed long-term is that they are more interested in status than growth.Be honest with yourself. Why do you really want what you want? Why do you put in all of the hours? Most people, if they are honest w ith themselves, want “success” because of some form of status it will give them. They won’t admit this to you, but deep down, the status is what matters. It is for this reason that success is generally short-lived for most people. Once they achieve a certain degree of status, their motivation for doing the work goes away. When your focus is on status, your job becomes to create and maintain that status. This is particularly common in today’s social media world where everyone is attempting to be famous for one thing or another.Growth often comes at the expense of status. In order to keep growing, you’ll need to risk the status and success of your past for something new and better. Of course, you’re not afraid of status. But that status is uninteresting and unimportant to you.The reason most writers will never succeed is that ultimately, what they really want is status. Yet, deep down, they also feel this strange belief that they need to be “pure” to their art, so they don ’t want to do it for money.People who go on to become successful at something are not afraid of success. They aren’t afraid of making money. But money inherently isn’t interesting to them. They are fascinated by growth and pushing their own boundaries. They can never actually quantify “success” because, for them, that very idea is continuously changing. They’ve never arrived, and they never intend to arrive. They don’t care about their previous achievements. They don’t care about their status.Do they have a status? Of course! When growth is your focus, status generally comes. But that status doesn’t matter. There’s no attachment to it. And there’s certainly no fear about losing that status.People seeking growth are willing to embrace the unknown. They’re willing to fail. They’re willing to attempt stuff that may not work. Actually, when true growth - seeing how far you can actually go - is your only true measure of success, then you’re willing to risk eve rything you’ve previously built to attempt what you want or believe you should do.Status is not what you should be measuringHow do we often measure a person’s success? It’s by their status.Status, then, can become our measure of success. And when the measure becomes the target, then it is no longer a useful measure. If a status is what you’re seeking, then you’re long-term growth is screwed. Once you get what you want, all of your motivation will evaporate. You’ll run out of future to pursue. You’ll stop being willing to disrupt your lifestyle or status in order to pursue something bigger and better.Status should be used as a means, not an endDon’t be afraid to obtain a status and leverage it to move forward. Don’t be afraid of people calling you a sell-out.Don’t be afraid of people being jealous of you and stealing your work.If growth is your focus and true motive, then you’ll do some powerfully innovative stuff. You’ll be an “industry transformer” who doe sn’t merely play the game, but changes and creates the game.In due process, you’ll develop status and success. And you won’t be afraid of that. In fact, you’ll often seek various statuses as a means of pursuing greater and greater growth. But the status itself means absolutely nothing to you. And the moment that particular status becomes a hindrance to the growth you’re seeking, you eliminate that status from your life. You don’t hold on to it.You’re willing to destroy what you were for what you will become. You never over-attach to a particular identity or status. You use them to move forward. But status is far from your target. It’s a measure, not a target. And you don’t have those two things confused. As a result, you never get derailed by failure or success. You’re fluid, not fixed. You are always pushing your own boundaries, always re-inventing yourself, always pushing your own limits of what is possible.Because you don’t care about status, you always create n ew and more compelling statuses. You have what other people want, and what their measure of success is. And you never cared about it in the first place. To quote Viktor Frankl from Man’s Search for Meaning: “Happiness must happen, and the same holds for success: you have to let it happen by not caring about it… Success will follow you precisely because you had forgotten to think about it.”When growth is your true goal, you have no real competition. You know that most of the competition, at some point or another, will achieve some status and eventually seek solely to maintain that status. And when your ultimate goal is simply to maintain where you are, then you’re well on your way to falling completely apart.Ready to upgrade?I’ve created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately.
